Located in Mercer County, Ewing Township was originally home to the Lenni Lenape Tribe, whose existence in the area dates back as far back as two thousand years. The region was first settled in 1699 by European colonists under the name of Hopewell Township and was fundamentally farmland for over one hundred years. The township was part of the "Washington Victory Trail," which was used by General George Washington and his troops in the surprise attack of Hessian soldiers in Harrisburg on Christmas Day of 1776. In 1834, the township was renamed Ewing in honor of the late Charles Ewing, who served as Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court between 1824 and 1832. During World War II Ewing Township jumped into modern suburban standing first with the contribution of the Navy Avenger Torpedo Bomber made by General Motors (at the time under the name of Eastern Aircraft), followed by a housing boom. Today the population is nearing 40,000 residents with an economy consisting of several colleges, government agencies and light industrial manufacturing plants.
