Originally named Raritan Township, the town's name was changed to Edison in 1954 to honor Thomas A. Edison who originally set up his home and workshop between 1876 and 1883. It was there that he is credited with inventing the phonograph and incandescent light bulb filament. The first street to ever use electric lighting for illumination was here on Christie Street. Today, Edison has a population of nearly 100,000 residents; making it the fifth largest municipality in the State. The Township boasts one of the most diversified populations in the state, with over 75 ethnic communities living within its 30 mile area.
