Located at the northern tip of Burlington County, Bordentown was first settled by Quaker family and later named after Joseph Borden who brought industry to the area because of its convenient location to a new ferry that traveled between Philadelphia and New York City. During the Revolutionary War, Bordentown was home to many proud and vocal American Patriots, producing signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as several well-known generals and colonels. This fame led to the destruction of most of the town by British and Hessian soldiers in 1778. Bordentown is and was home to many respected residents of the town including Clara Barton, who started New Jersey's first public school and later founded the American Red Cross. Other Bordentown residents include a former King (Joseph Bonaparte), U.S. President (John Quincy Adams) as well as engineers, sculptors and statesmen. Today the town is home to nearly 4000 residents and growing but still has pride in being "the little city with a lot of charm," which is apparent whether viewing art at the local gallery or perusing books at several of the antique book collector shops.
